Description

His work is among the rare figurative pieces by Victor Vasarely, the founder of Op Art. In “Self-Portrait”, the artist merges his characteristic formal discipline with an intimate, introspective tone. The composition presents a stylised, almost geometrically constructed figure standing within a distorted interior space — a reflection of the artist’s perception of himself and his relationship to spatial reality.

Vasarely employs a rhythmic interplay of diagonal lines, planes, and light beams that set the space in motion. The shimmering contrasts of blue, yellow, and brown, punctuated by strong blacks and greys, create a dynamic sense of depth. Despite its figurative motif, the image remains fundamentally constructive, blurring the line between abstraction and representation.

“Self-Portrait” epitomises Vasarely’s pursuit of a universal visual language where form, colour, and optical perception converge into a system of pure visual harmony. Both personal and conceptual, the work is a rare synthesis of individual identity and geometric order.
